The novel deals with the effects of a nuclear war on the fictional small town of Fort Repose, Florida, which is based upon the actual city of Mount Dora, Florida.

Amanda Vaill, author of two other superb works of non-fiction, looks at three "couples" who were part of the press coverage of the war in her new book, "Hotel Florida: Truth, Love, and Death in the Spanish Civil War", Two of the six were writers, Ernest Hemingway and his soon-to-be third wife, Martha Gellhorn/5().

Hotel Florida is the book I wanted to write, but it appears Amanda Vaill has beat me to it, and with great success. The book recapitulates the experiences, participation, and actions of six renowned journalists during the Spanish Civil War and their own personal struggles with integrity, truth, fear, and love in a brutal Civil War/5.

Book Review: 'Hotel Florida: Truth, Love, And Death In The Spanish Civil War' By Amanda Vaill Biographer Amanda Vaill's new book delves deeply into the lives of journalists like Ernest Hemingway. Prime Directive, by Judith and Garfield Reeves-Stevens; a Star Trek novel where an alien civilization is apparently destroyed by a sudden, unexpected nuclear war among its own people; Pulling Through, by Dean Ing; first half of the book is a novel on a family surviving a nuclear blast, the second half is a non-fiction survival guide.

The book covers a variety of aspects beyond the battles in Florida such as blockade operations, minorities, Unionists, and Reconstruction. It also attempts to address the role of Florida regiments in the Confederate army, but those chapters end up more a brief military history of the war without enough attention paid to the regiments themselves /5.

Florida’s weirdness is legendary, and plenty of authors have celebrated that weirdness in awesome novels. Weird or profound, these 10 books set in Florida demonstrate that in fiction, sometimes what's most important is the setting.
